3.6 TOURISM
INDUSTRY IN LENGGONG VALLEY, PERAK:
3.6.1
Introduction
Lenggong
Valley is a hidden natural beauty in Malaysia, quite unknown to both locals and
foreigners until it was declared by UNESCO as Malaysia 4th
World Heritage Site recently. It has many tourism attractions beside the
discovery of Perak Man, it has the best lakes, many crystal-clear waterfalls,
beautiful caves and jungle trekking site. In addition, it has windy-cool
weather all year-round. The completion of the Expressway from Kuala
Kangsar to Gerik has made Lenggong Valley a more favourable tourism destination
in Malaysia.
Briefly,
Perak State experienced high volume of visitors, in the region of 1 million
visitors per year in 1996. The forecast of visitors is only based on hotel
occupancy and does not include all other visitors. The number of visitors to
Perak is now more than few millions, if visitors who stay with friends and
families are included.
There
is no specific data to show the statistic of tourists visiting Lenggong Valley,
Perak, but it has great potential to broaden the tourism market, especially in
historical, natural or eco-tourism, now recognized by UNESCO as Malaysia 4th
World Heritage Site.

3.6.4
The Potential of the Tourism Development
In
Lenggong Valley, there are many opportunities to develop the tourism industry
and
it will give the great impetus on the economy of the region.
3.6.4.1
The Increasing Number of Residence in Ipoh
The
increasing number of residence will lead to the demand of more places for
recreation
and outings. Lenggong Valley has the ability to cater such growing demand.
3.6.4.2
Thailand border Town, Betong
Thailand
not only the source of international tourists arrival to Malaysia, but
also the famous tourist destination of the world. Therefore,
Lenggong Valley has the ability to seize the opportunity because it is located
near the border town of Thailand. The good promotion and infrastructure
provided will encourage the tourists from Thailand to come to
Malaysia. It takes 45 minutes drive by New Expressway from Lenggong
Valley.
3.6.4.3
The Development of Facilities
Currently,
the lodging facilities provided are inadequate and low standard. Therefore, the
State Government should give more incentive for hotel industry to tap this
great potential tourism destination to develop more lodging facilities into
larger scale.
3.6.4.4
‘Eco-Tourism’
The
main attraction for people to come to Lenggong Valley is its natural resources.
It gives this region the opportunity to develop ‘eco-tourism’ industry.
Forests, wildlife and waterfalls gives the chances to the visitors to enjoy the
natural life.
The
reserved forest can be developed as ‘ecology garden’ with the providing
of tourist facilities at the minimum stage while protecting the ecology area.
It can provide the path way with the focal point to the river, ponds etc.
Even
though “‘eco-tourism’” activity gives a limited income and job
opportunity, it can be combined to the other region to create an interesting
tour package. Belum Valley and Tasik Temengor can be developed
major tourism destinations, watching wildlife point and sport activity such as
fishing, boating and kayaking.
3.6.4.5
Tourists Stay in Villages:
The
lodging facilities in villages is the first step in providing lodging
facilities with low cost. The tourist activity that based on village
environment can give them opportunity to feel the local condition and to know
the local culture. Stay in the traditional village is preferred in today
tourism market, especially to the foreigners with the locals who come from
urban. It also provide locals activity such as handicraft, restaurant, and
tourist guide.
The
main strategy in providing the lodging facilities in rural area is through ‘the
home-stay’ program. Such project does not involve high cost and is highly
popular amongst foreign visitors to other ASEAN countries. It can be developed
by providing chalet or camping sites, such as Kampung Gelok and Kampung
Raban in Lenggong Valley.
3.6.4.6
Leisure Spots
Tasik/Lake
Temengor and Tasik/Lake Chenderoh is good location to build
the lake resorts that can gives a lot of recreation activity such as fishing,
sailing, jet-ski, caves discovering and so on.
With
the other activity such as ‘eco-tourism’, historic and local cultures, the
opportunity to develop the lake resorts is very good idea. The Government
should provide the main plan to develop these areas, including the facilities
to tourist in the low and medium class, picnic areas, camping sites and
chalets. There are possibilities to provide houseboat for overnight stay as
unique lodging facility.
In
Tasik/Lake Temengor, there is possibility to provide the exclusive
resort for the high-class tourists.
3.6.4.7
Agro-based Tourism:
Some
international tourists are interested in ‘agro-tourism’ which is not available
in their countries. The potential to be develop as ‘agro-tourism’ is the Tea
Plantation in Lenggong Valley. A tea concept restaurant or tea-house gives the
tourists chance to taste the various types of local tea and also the purity of
the tea. This is important for tourists to know the history behind the tea plantation
in Malaysia.
3.6.4.8
Development of Tasik Temengor as tourism
In
addition to the continued development of accommodation facilities on the Tasik/Lake
Temengor, there are other opportunities to develop other tourism
facilities as major tourists areas .Tasik Temengor/Lake can be initial
site tour to the Lembah Belum.
Other
existing resorts are fishing and kayaking activities. More water sports
should be encouraged by providing windsurfing, jet ski, speed boat, water
skiing and others. In addition, the growth opportunities in this area include
construction of schools that provide training courses such as water sports and
jungle trekking.
Other
development opportunities including the construction of indigenous information
center where visitors can see for yourself and learn how the lives and culture
of aboriginal people in this area.
Aboriginal
or orang asli settlements in some parts of Lenggong Valley offers a
tourism attraction for foreign tourists an opportunity to learn their way
of life. The positive ways such as creating indigenous information center to
enhance the local cultural-based of tourism development.
3.6.4.9
The Development of the Caves as Tourist Attraction
There
are many caves in Lenggong Valley that can be developed as tourists’
attraction. Ample parking space to be provided in Gua/Cave Kajang due to
the increased number of visitors. It is proposed Tourists’
Information Booth be set up near the cave. Other facilities to be provided
are public toilets, signboards and tourists’ guide to give some
information to the tourists.
3.6.4.10
Upgrading of the Waterfalls Area
There
are many waterfalls in the Lenggong Valley but not enough facilities provided
to the tourists. It is possible to provide more public toilets, rest area
(huts), picnic area, camping sites and rubbish bins. Food stall operators
be educated to maintain cleanliness in their surrounding areas.
3.6.4.11
Safaris Park Project
The
local authority had proposed an ideal Safaris Park project since 1996, nothing
has been materialized yet but since Lenggong Valley is now recognized a World
Heritage Site, this project is worthy for further consideration by the State
Tourism Authority.
3.6.6
PROBLEMS AND ISSUES:
3.6.6.1
Limited Tourists’ Development Infrastructures
There
are many tourists’ attractions in Lenggong Valley but the facilities
provided are inadequate and not up to the standard.
3.6.6.2
The Information of the Attractions
The
tourist spot in the area cannot attract more tourist because it is located far
between each other.
3.6.6.3
The Limited Lodging Facilities
Currently,
the lodging facilities are limited. This will lead to short vacation and
minimum stay by tourists, despite its many attractions.
3.6.6.4
Limited Exposure
Some
of the main tourism attractions not even known to the local residents, least
the foreign tourists. There should more publicity, leaflets to be
distributed at Tourists' Information Booths.
3.6.6.5
Low Cost Airlines
If
the low cost airlines, such as Air Asia, Firefly include Lenggong Valley in
their route, there will be great demand by both local and international
visitors to this tourism destination and Thailand border town, Betong.
3.6.6.6
The Network System and the Limited Number of Signboard
More
signage and signboards should be installed on Highway whereby visitors can
easily reach their destinations without much problem. More accessible roads to
be built on mountain streams areas whereby adventurous tourists can set up
their camping sites to enjoy natural beauty of Lenggong Valley.
